GTO stands for Game Theory Optimal. But what matters isn't the name — it's the idea: it's a way to play with no weak spots. You don't try to guess your opponent's cards; you play so balanced that it's never profitable for them to bluff you or to catch your bluff.
Picture a player who bets big only with strong hands. He's easy to read: see a big bet, fold. The GTO approach removes that predictability: strong hands and bluffs come in the right proportion, and the opponent simply doesn't know what you have.
GTO vs "exploit": two approaches
- GTO — play evenly, with no weak spots. It's hard to beat such a player.
- Exploit — spot specific mistakes and punish them. Works against weaker players, but you can be caught too.
For a beginner it makes sense to start with the GTO base: it gives stability and protects from crude mistakes. Exploiting comes later, with experience.
