The abbreviation GTO (Game Theory Optimal) means the "game-theory-optimal" strategy. The idea is simple: play in a way that the opponent cannot beat you, however they act.

What GTO is about

GTO is a balanced strategy. Your bets cannot be "read" for hand strength: sometimes you bluff, sometimes you bet with a strong hand — in proportions that make you impossible to exploit.

If exploitation is adapting to a specific opponent, GTO is an "unbeatable" baseline.

Range balance

The key concept is the range: the set of hands for a given action. A balanced range contains both strong hands and bluffs.

A simple example

If you bet big only with the nuts, the opponent will always fold. Add some bluffs — and they no longer know whether to believe you.

Does a beginner need this

At the start the basics and discipline matter more. But understanding GTO helps you think in ranges. That is why our club is called Poker Room GTO: for us poker is an intellectual sport.

How to start applying GTO

A beginner doesn't need to memorise solvers — it's enough to grasp the basics: think in ranges rather than single hands, account for position and don't telegraph the strength of your hand with bet sizing. These fundamentals already noticeably raise your game in any tournament.
